Things to Do in California: Travelogues
Disneyland Travel in the Early Years
Written by Karen Reno on Aug 14, 2008

Disneyland of today was alot different than the days when I was a youngster of the 50's & 60's. Not only were there attractions to ride & of course, the "mouse" himself, but the atmosphere a lot different. There were dress codes visitors had to meet to be allowed in park. NO JEANS!! Yes, you heard right!. Men wore slacks and women...all those moms, wore dresses and heels. Boys wore pants or shorts and little girls in dresses too. Teen girls, no excessive makeup allowed, even for staff. No long hair on men..in other words, no hippies! It was like visiting in a land of Ward and June Cleaver.
When it was hot, the asphalt softened on Main St & all you could see was pimple marks left by the heels.
When Small World opened, children representing each country came & poured water from their country into the waterway. Walt Disney was there among all the children...what a sight!
When Walt Disney was in the park, he rode around in one of the fire trucks or antique cars. He was very visible to guests and employees. I was fortunate to have an uncle who worked in the park since its opening. We were able to see attractions during construction (ruined the surprises) including the Haunted Mansion. Bummer, no real ghosts! Ahhh to visit now is like a land of tomorrow with yesterday only a memory in my heart..but I still smile.
